Many people are upset about the announcement of the new Doctor (I’m personally very excited about Peter Capaldi, but I understand why people would be urg about it). In addition to typing up long posts on Tumblr and Facebook about said casting decision, I would also like to urge people to check out a wonderful, little-known sci-fi show from 2008 called The Middleman.
Because it basically does all of the things people are upset at Doctor Who for not doing. And it’s one of the best shows ever.
Basic Plot: Unemployed artist Wendy Watson (played by Natalie Morales) is hired for a job by a temp agency that turns out to be a recruitment office for a secret organization (which is so secret that it’s called the Organization Too Secret to Know, or OTS2K). Said secret organization employs people called “Middlemen” (or “Middlewomen”) who keep the world protected from a variety of misguided supervillains and supernatural forces, while keeping the rest of the world from knowing about said misguided supervillains and supernatural forces. So it’s kind of like Torchwood but with 0% angst.
SJ Brownie Points: The main character is a woman of color (though it’s called The Middleman, the show is really all about Wendy). The central relationship on the show is Wendy and her room mate Lacie, who are THE BEST and act like how actual girl friends in real life act and there are never any stupid plots about them being jealous over boys or whatnot. The show is basically THE Bechdel Test. Later on, when Wendy gets a boyfriend, he’s also super-awesome and super-supportive of her new job, even though it means he doesn’t get to see her as much as he would like, because the job makes her really happy and fulfilled. (The show also makes it obvious that the boyfriend and Wendy are sleeping together and it’s TOTALLY NOT A BIG DEAL it treats it as completely normal.) The whole show is basically about Wendy discovering what she wants in life and going after that with gusto and being happy. With mutant gorillas and vampire puppets. Yes, VAMPIRE PUPPETS. It’s THE BEST.
Sadly, this show only lasted for one season, but the entire thing is available on DVD. It’s not legally streaming anywhere, but I’m sure there are places you can find it online.
SO YES IF DOCTOR WHO IS GETTIN’ YOU DOWN, POP THIS IN. As I said, best show ever. Like, seriously, there is an episode featuring zombie fish that makes tons of references to the band The Zombies. And Kevin Sorbo shows up. And Mark Sheppard (of course).
